When you have an extra player for 89 minutes, you’re always expected to dominate possession, but you don’t always see such eye catching score lines. This is due to teams defending with 2 low blocks and rarely committing numbers
forward, it is difficult to find space and can be frustrating.
We went into the game with the Gaffer handing Lloyd Groves his starting debut, with Moran picking up a hammy in the Brantham game. Skipper Taylor Parr missed out again but is getting closer whilst I am a few weeks away with a glass hamstring. From kick off we won the ball back pressing high. Good link play saw us awarded a penalty with Hall upended with only the keeper to beat. Letter of the law says red and so it was. Mikey Hyem stepped up and converted
the penalty to give us the perfect start with a minute on the clock.
We moved the ball well for 15 minutes and created numerous openings, with only casual finishing stopping us from winning the game in that first quarter. Hyem dwelled when put through 1v1 on two occasions, Hall passed up two other presentable chances and Spark, DK and McDonald all saw chances slip away.
Although we were in complete control, when you pass up so many guilt edged chances it’s always a concern, in the respects that you can get hit with a sucker punch but also you want the group to keep high standards and develop a ruthless streak.
On 40 minutes we got the second with slick interplay sending Hall clear, James held off the chasing defender before coolly slotting beyond the visiting keeper. Moments after we had a scare, we conceded an unnecessary free kick which was whipped into dangerous area. We were slow to pick up our runners and marking on the wrong side, the lad got in too easily but thankfully headed against the underside of the bar and away. And to put the game beyond doubt Groves making his first start for the club headed powerfully home from a Hall set play soon after.
Although 3 to the good there were one or two things we were not entirely happy with. We wanted to be more patient in our build up play and recognise when to draw teams out and when to penetrate.
Fair play to the boys, we started about our business fantastically well after the break and blitzed Thetford with the intensity of our pressing and quality of our passing and movement. Hally added the 4th on 49 minutes before
claiming his hat trick 3 minutes later from the spot when the referee adjudged a Thetford player to have handled.
Austen Diaper added his industry and customary goal to proceedings on 70 minutes after Kerrigan had a shot parried
into his path. And a minute later after a rare raid forward we countered brilliantly with pace and incision, Hyem fantastically turned and drifted a ball to Kerrigan who controlled and finished clinically to make it 7.
On 73 minutes the lively Ben Yeomens was sent crashing in the box and Hyem again stepped up to convert low to the keepers left for the 8th. At the other end Niall made a smart stop to preserve his clean sheet whilst we moved the ball well against an understandably tiring Thetford team. Another incisive move saw Yeomens blaze over from 3
yards denying him the goal his efforts deserved off the bench.
With the standards and ability of the group so high, the challenge for us as a squad is to maintain and develop week to week, if we can do this we are in for another productive season.
Lastly a big thank you to the board and volunteers for serving up a pitch which is letting us move the ball in an effective manner. It makes the world of difference to the tempo in which we want to play and will no doubt help us get to where we want to be on and off the pitch!!
On Saturday we are on FA Cup duty with a visit to Walsham Le Willows for what will be a tough challenge, but one the group are relishing.
See you at the far post!
