“Goddy test the depths” Match Report by Matt Haniver

Given the last 2 encounters with Gorleston, the last thing we wanted was so many key attacking players unavailable to us for the long visit to the coast.

Messrs Hyem, Diaper, Yambasu and Shinn were all absent which meant that we had to reshuffle our system and personnel. We went with a 3-5-2 with Brown and Spark spearheading the attack.

In a controlled display we were very comfortable without creating a great deal on a big bumpy pitch. Spark shot tamely after finding himself 1v1 whilst at the other end Conroy turned a curling effort away during a first half full of endeavour but few openings.

With Hall and McDonald giving us great energy at wing backs, we were able to pin the home side back, forcing a number of set plays.

On the hour we got the deserved break through when a McDonald long throw was flicked on by Groves. The ball struck a home defender and bounced into the net.

This was however after Conroy made a great save from close range following the home sides best chance of the game. Had this gone in, it would have been a massive test for us against a spirited team.

We doubled our money 5 minutes later when LUKE BROWN hooked home following a set play on 65 minutes.

From here we were really comfortable, Parr and Brown had great chances to extend our lead as Gorleston committed numbers forward. However, it was another set play that secured the 3 points. The magnificent CHARLIE BOWEN overhead kicked brilliantly into the top corner to set Goddy celebrations off.

It was a wonderful result, despite having so many attacking options unavailable. The group have shown yet again that they have the stomach for the fight after the set back in the County Cup in midweek.

On Wednesday we face Haverhill Rovers for another tough challenge. We ran out 0-3 winners back in September after a dominant display and will have to be at our best if we wish to take the points again.

See you at the far post.
