Wednesday 2nd March 2016 – Thurlow Nunn Premier Division
Goddy Rovers 6 Haverhill Rovers 0
Goals: Luke Brown 2, Lloyd Groves, Mike Hyem, Austen Diaper, Charlie Bowen
With heavy rain before the game, the ground staff and volunteers must take a huge amount of credit for getting the game on, and the pitch into a condition deemed playable.
By the end of the game the surface was more brown than green as it cut up as the rain was unrelenting in the 90 minutes.
We talked about coming out of the traps quickly. We have the ability to blow teams away in the opening minutes, and so it proved as we scored 3 in the opening 6 minutes.
LUKE BROWN opened the scoring, tapping home from a McDonald throw on 2 minutes. Better was to follow as BROWN tapped home following a rampant counter on 4 minutes.
We instantly pressed and won the ball back, forced a corner, which Hall whipped brilliantly onto the head of the onrushing HYEM who powered home for 3-0 with 6 minutes on the clock.
CHARLIE BOWEN who has discovered his scoring touch glanced home another Hall corner for 4 on 20 and LLOYD GROVES was on hand to finish from close range to give us our 5th of the night.
Parr, Spark, Hyem and Brown all had good chances to inflict further damage as we mercilessly tore into the visitors with our high pressing and slick link play.
The second half as so often the case didn’t have the same flow as the first as Haverhill played with 2 low blocks, looking to limit further damage. To their credit, they never threw the towel in and competed for every ball on a quagmire of a pitch.
We carved out some more chances following the introduction of John Yambasu and following another Spark cross, AUSTEN DIAPER was on hand to stab the 6th and final goal of the night on 70 minutes.
The football we played in the first half, on such a sticky pitch is a credit to the quality of the group and shows that we are capable of great things.
On Saturday we face Long Melford who have climbed the table steadily since Christmas and pose a real threat to anyone on their day. Weather dependant we hope to have your support!
See you at the far post
